The Open Blog

A week today we will crown the champion golfer of the year but today, at a wet and miserable Royal Troon, it is the first official practice day. Some notable names out on course today include Shane Lowery, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Jim Furyk, Colin Montgomerie, Jason Day, Darren Clarke and defending champion Zach Johnson.

It is an incredible day of sport with the Wimbledon final, the British Grand Prix, the AAM Scottish Open and the Euro 2016 final all taking place.

Looking ahead to The Open, weather forecasts seem to suggest that the winds are most likely to be from the south or southwest. This, quite simply, means against for the majority of the front nine and helping on the way home. It could be argued that this would be the most favourable for the players given that the back 9 would expect to play up to three shots harder. That said, the strength of the breeze looks to be between 10-20 mph which will make the golf course testing no matter.

Tomorrow in the media centre we will hear from defending champion Zach Johnson, local hero Colin Montgomerie and world number one Jason Day.
